Corina's Autism awareness shoot!

Corina was our second place winner in the Top Model Contest. When we asked her what her dream shoot was, she told us about how she wanted to do a photo shoot that brought awareness to autism. We knew right away that this shoot would be something special.  We helped bring her vision to life and here is her story.....

"For as long as I can remember I have always looked up to my cousin Kodie, as all little kids do with their older cousins. I truly idolized him. I always thought he was the coolest person and that he could protect me from anything. Then, when I got older I gained an understanding of autism, and that Kodie was the 1 in 68, he had autism. At that moment the table had turned. I became his protector. I didn’t let anything happen to him and I would look after him with all my heart. I would and will do anything for him. He has made a tremendous impact on my life and I couldn’t be more grateful. I will always cherish the memories that I have with him. At one point, he was living with my mom and I, and I can remember playing in the snow together or playing our computer games. Some days were harder than others with numerous challenges, but no matter what, we would get through them as a family. I strongly feel that our entire family wouldn’t have the relationship or be where we are today if it wasn’t for Kodie. He is the key to our hearts and the puzzle piece holding us together. If It wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be going into the career path I am today.
In honor of my cousin and all the other kids who have autism, or may not know that they have it yet, I have decided to major in communications and disorders. I plan to go to college to become a speech therapist for 1-3 year olds. Many people may not know, but speech therapists are a member of a team who help with the process of testing to determining whether or not a child has autism. This is just one area that these kids face a challenge, and with this career path I will be able to work one on one with them and try to make a difference in not only their lives, but in the lives of their families as well. I may not be able to prevent kids from getting autism single handedly, but my goal is to help those who are in need and to make a difference in their lives."

"For something that has an impact on so many people’s lives, this cause truly doesn’t get the attention and support it deserves. So in honor of my cousin, Kodie, and the rest of the people who have been diagnosed with autism, I decided to create and dedicate a photo shoot to raise awareness to those who need it the most. The number of kids who are diagnosed with Autism grows tremendously each year. As of right now 1 in 68 kids become Autistic. My goal with this photoshoot is to spread the word even more, and let all those who are effected one way or another know that they are not alone, and that they’ll never be forgotten. The message behind the puzzle piece is a universal symbol that represents autism in many ways."

"The pieces are all different shapes, showing the complexity of the autism spectrum and also represents how each person has a different story yet they are going through similar things. Also, these pieces are bright and colorful to show hope, because no matter what the day may bring, we can’t lose sight of that. So, next time you encounter someone who has autism, treat them with respect, an open mind, and a smile. Think before you judge. Love, support, educate, advocate, Autism Awareness."

"I want to thank you grandma Kathie for teaching me so much about autism. She has dedicated so much of her life and her heart to researching, advocating, and trying to make a difference. She has always been my role model, motivated me, and has given me so much inspiration. Kodie and I are proud to call you our grandma."
