Fall is one of my favorite times of year for senior pictures in Northern California. The light gets softer, the colors get richer, and everything just feels cozy. If you’re planning fall senior photos, here’s what makes them work.
1. Shoot during golden hour.
The hour before sunset gives you that warm, glowy light fall photos are known for. It’s flattering on everyone, and it makes the leaves practically light up.
2. Wear warm, rich colors.
Think rust, mustard, olive, cream, burgundy, and brown. These tones blend beautifully with fall scenery without competing with it. Skip neon and stark white. They tend to pull attention away from you.
3. Layer it up.

Around Lodi and Sacramento, our best fall color usually shows up from late October through mid-December. Vineyards, oak trees, and spots along the river are some of my favorites when the leaves turn.

A Two-Part Fall Senior Picture Dream: West 12 Ranch Studio & Golden Hour by the River
We kicked off her session midday at the beautiful West 12 Ranch Studio in Lodi, CA. This location always brings that rustic-meets-vintage magic with its barns, props, and country charm. Later, we moved to a nearby river spot just in time for golden hour. The river location is one of my faves—it offers so many dreamy backdrops: wide open meadows, dirt roads, a country-style fence, tall dry grasses, and vibrant fall foliage. What were you most nervous about? When I first started planning my senior session with Michelle, I was worried about not feeling confident in my outfits. Being worried made me nervous.
