What Is the Best Time of Year for Senior Pictures in Sacramento?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions, “When should I book my senior pictures”
If you've been putting off booking your senior portraits because you're not sure when to do it — this post is for you.
The short answer: there's no bad time of year in Sacramento. The longer answer is that each season has its own vibe, and the best time really depends on what you're going for.
Here's a breakdown of what shooting in Sacramento looks like throughout the year — so you can pick the season that fits your personality.
Summer (June – August):
Golden, Bold, and Classic Sacramento Summer is peak senior season for a reason. Golden hour in Sacramento in July and August is unreal — warm, rich, glowing light that makes everything look cinematic. Plus dreamy wild flower fields that you can find at nearby flower farms. Sessions during summer are always scheduled for early morning or evening to avoid the harsh midday sun (and to keep you comfortable). Done right, summer sessions have that iconic NorCal golden look that never goes out of style. The fields are gold instead of green, the sky turns amber at sunset, and the whole thing feels big and expansive.
Best for: Seniors who want that warm, glowy California aesthetic. Those beautiful flower fields like the picture above, Bold personalities. Urban shoots in Old Sac and downtown. Heads up: Summer books up the fastest of any season. If you want summer, don't wait.
Fall (September – November): Warm Tones, Fall flower fields
Fall is an underrated season for senior pictures in Sacramento. The temperatures finally drop to something reasonable, the light turns warm and golden, and the foliage starts shifting — especially up in the foothills and around Folsom Lake.
If you're a senior who's starting to think ahead, fall is a great time for your senior pictures. With all the things Senior Year has coming your way Summer and Fall are the best seasons in my opinion. It helps take the stress out of senior year when you book in these seasons and get a big thing checked off your long list of things to do for senior year. Best for: Warm tones, fall flower fields, glowy sun, and earthy looks. Seniors who want a little more visual texture.
Winter (December – February): Moody, Soft, and Underestimated
Winter is Sacramento's secret weapon for portraits. The light in December and January is soft and even — no harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun. You can shoot at almost any time of day and get beautiful results. The green hills start coming back after the first rains. The Sacramento area stays mild enough to shoot comfortably in a light jacket. And honestly? Winter sessions have a certain quiet, moody quality that stands out. Best for: Seniors who want something a little different. Overcast moody looks. Anyone who doesn't love heat or wants more flexibility with shoot timing. Plus it is great for those that want to venture out to the beach!
Spring (March – May): Beautiful — But Here's the Reality
Spring looks gorgeous on paper. Green hills, a few wildflowers, soft light, comfortable temperatures. The American River Parkway is lush, McKinley Park's rose garden is starting to bloom, and everything feels alive in a way that photographs beautifully.
So why do I actually steer most seniors away from spring?
Because spring is also the busiest, most chaotic stretch of senior year. AP exams. Prom. Spring sports championships. College decision deadlines. Senior nights. The calendar fills up fast — and when life gets busy, photo sessions are the first thing that gets pushed.
There's also the weather. Sacramento springs can be unpredictable, and rain reschedules happen. When you're already juggling a packed schedule, adding a reschedule into the mix creates more stress than it's worth.
The seniors who book spring sessions with the best intentions are often the ones scrambling in May trying to find a date before graduation.
The honest truth: If you want that green, lush look, it's worth asking whether late winter (January–February) might actually be a better fit. The hills are just as green, the wildflowers are starting to show, and your schedule is a lot more open.
If spring is the only option: Book as early as possible — ideally before the school year even starts — and go in knowing that flexibility matters. The later you wait to book, the harder it gets.
So... What's Actually the Best Time?
Here's my honest take: the best time is when it works for YOU — your schedule, your look, and what you want your photos to feel like.
What I'd caution against is waiting so long that you end up booking in a rush or missing out on your first-choice dates. Summer and spring book up fast. If you have a season in mind, the time to reach out is now — not later. I work with high school seniors across Sacramento, Folsom, Elk Grove, Roseville, Granite Bay, El Dorado Hills, and the surrounding areas year-round.
