Some senior sessions tell you who someone is before you even start shooting. Sylvie's was one of them. This Oak Ridge High School Senior had some unique locations which made her senior photo session stand out!

We started right at home in El Dorado Hills — literally in her own yard — and ended the evening at Folsom Lake as the light went gold over the fields. In between, we managed to fit in a soccer career's worth of memories, a college pennant, and enough cowboy boots to make this one feel unmistakably her.

Starting on Home Turf

There's something different about beginning a session in the exact spot where someone grew up. We set up right in Sylvie's yard for a flatlay that took years to put together — her #8 jersey, San Juan Soccer Club gear, medals, trophies, and a framed cover of Soccer World Today from when she was still a kid learning the game. Laid out together, it's not really a photo of soccer equipment. It's a photo of a decade of Saturday mornings, travel tournaments, and a jersey number that's meant something to her the whole time.

That's the kind of thing I love building into a session — not because it looks good on its own (though it does), but because it's the part of her senior year that a plain portrait would never capture.

A Nod to What's Next

A few steps away, we shot Sylvie with her Jessup University pennant against a stone entryway — the kind of quiet, confident portrait that's just as much about where she's headed as where she's been. It's simple, it's not overdone, and it's exactly the photo her family is going to want printed the moment she gets her acceptance letter framed next to it.

Golden Hour at Folsom Lake

From there, we made our way to Folsom Lake for the second half of the session, timed for that late golden light that Northern California does so well. This is where Sylvie's outfits really got to breathe — a chambray halter dress with pink-ribboned boots against a white ranch fence, a flowy white skirt and lace top out in the open field, and a brown dress that caught the last of the sunset light walking through tall grass.

Folsom Lake does this thing where it gives you an entirely different look depending on which direction you're facing — open fields one way, water and rustic fencing the other. For Sylvie, it meant we never ran out of new backdrops without ever leaving the same general area.

The Little Details

A rust-colored off-shoulder sweater and denim mini skirt made for one of my favorite looks of the day — casual, warm-toned, and perfect for a walk down a golden, tree-lined road as the sun dropped low. She carried a small bouquet through several of these looks, and somehow it made every photo feel a little more like a moment and a little less like a pose.

And of course, we grabbed the requisite selfie with Mom at the end — sunburnt cheeks, flowers still in hand, everybody laughing. Those unscripted minutes between the "real" photos are usually the ones families end up loving just as much.

Why This Combination Work

Home and Folsom Lake might seem like an unlikely pairing, but that's exactly the point — your senior pictures don't have to happen in one single spot to tell one cohesive story. Starting somewhere personal and ending somewhere beautiful gave Sylvie's gallery range: some portraits that are quiet and specific to her, others that are wide open and golden and timeless.
