What to Wear for Fall Senior Pictures: Outfit Ideas That Photograph Beautifully
Fall is one of my favorite times of year for senior pictures in Northern California.
The light is beautiful, the temperatures start cooling down, and we can get everything from golden fields and warm fall colors to trees that are still completely green.
But one of the biggest questions I get from seniors before their session is:
What should I wear for fall senior pictures?
Here's the good news—you don't need to show up in head-to-toe brown just because it's fall.
Your outfits should still feel like you.
The goal is to choose outfits that photograph well, work with your locations, and give your final gallery plenty of variety.
1. Start With an Outfit That Feels Like You
Your first outfit doesn't need to be fancy.
In fact, I love starting with something you would actually wear.
Think:
Jeans + a cute top
A fitted tee + denim
A casual dress
A sweater + jeans
Boots + your favorite jacket
Sneakers + a more relaxed outfit
Senior pictures shouldn't feel like you're playing dress-up for someone else's photos.
When you look back at these pictures years from now, I want you to recognize yourself.
2. Add One Dressier Look
Even if you're normally a jeans-and-sneakers person, I recommend bringing at least one outfit that's a little more elevated.
For girls, that could be a dress, skirt, boots or a dressier top.
For guys, try a button-down, nice pants, a jacket or another outfit that's one step up from what you'd normally wear to school.
You don't have to go formal.
We just want enough variety that your final senior pictures don't all have the same feel.
3. Use Fall Colors Without Going Overboard
You don't have to wear orange, brown and mustard just because your session is in October.
Instead, think about colors that work beautifully with the season.
Cream
Black
Denim
Deep green
Burgundy
Rust
Camel
Chocolate brown
Navy
Warm neutrals
And don't be afraid of white.
A white or cream outfit can look incredible against fall colors and golden grass.
4. Bring Layers
Fall is the perfect time to add layers because they give us an easy way to change your look without doing a complete outfit change.
Think:
Denim jacket
Leather jacket
Cardigan
Flannel
Blazer
Vest
Oversized sweater
We can photograph the outfit both with and without the layer, giving you even more variety.
5. Don't Forget About Your Shoes
Shoes matter more than you might think.
Your shoes should make sense with your outfit and the location.
Boots are perfect for fall and photograph beautifully with dresses, skirts and denim. Sneakers can keep a casual outfit feeling like you.
And if we're heading somewhere with dirt, fields or uneven terrain, I'll help you make sure your shoes actually work for where we're going.
6. Bring Something That Shows Your Personality
Not every outfit has to be about fashion.
Your senior session is about documenting who you are right now.
That might mean bringing your:
Letterman jacket
Sports uniform
FFA jacket
Cowboy boots
Favorite hoodie
College sweatshirt
Dance outfit
Band or cheer uniform
You can also bring your truck, car, guitar, fishing gear, dog or something connected to a hobby you love.
Those are often the pictures that end up meaning the most.
How Many Outfits Should You Bring for Senior Pictures?
For my senior sessions, I've found that four to five outfits is the sweet spot.
It gives us enough variety to create completely different looks without spending your entire session changing clothes.
A great five-outfit lineup might look like:
1. Everyday You — jeans, sneakers and a favorite top
2. Dressier — a dress, skirt, button-down or elevated outfit
3. Fall Look — boots, layers, sweater or jacket
4. Personality — sport, FFA, letterman jacket or hobby
5. Wild Card — something fun you absolutely love
And don't worry about figuring all of this out on your own.

What Should You NOT Wear for Fall Senior Pictures?
There aren't many absolute rules because personal style matters.
But I would avoid choosing five outfits that all look the same.
Five pairs of jeans with five slightly different tops won't give you nearly as much variety as mixing casual, dressy and personality-driven looks.
I also wouldn't buy something simply because Pinterest told you it's a "senior picture outfit."
If you put it on and immediately feel uncomfortable or like you're wearing someone else's clothes, skip it.
Confidence photographs better than any trend.
Fall Senior Pictures in Northern California
One of the things I love about fall senior pictures in Northern California is that we don't get just one "fall look."
Depending on when and where we photograph, we might have golden grass, warm fall leaves, evergreen landscapes, water, vineyards, urban backgrounds or even areas that still look like summer.
I photograph high school seniors throughout Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, Granite Bay, El Dorado Hills, Elk Grove, Lodi and surrounding Northern California areas.
We'll choose your locations based on the look you want and then plan your outfits around them.
Because the best senior picture outfit isn't the one that's trending.
It's the one that makes you feel like you.
